Named for the month it was born
Chanel released the bag in February 1955 and called it the 2.55 after that date. Its real innovation was the shoulder strap. In her words, she was tired of carrying bags by hand and losing them, so she slipped a strap over her shoulder and freed her hands.
The burgundy lining echoes the uniforms of the Aubazine convent where Chanel was raised. The diamond quilting borrows from the jackets worn by racetrack jockeys. The rectangular clasp, known as the Mademoiselle lock, nods to the fact that she never married.

The case for
Caviar is the workhorse choice. Owners report black caviar flaps looking close to new after years of steady use, while lambskin marks faster and gets saved for gentler days.
It keeps its shape. Decade-old flaps are described as still standing up on their own, and owners credit the double flap construction for holding the structure over time.
The classic itself is rarely the regret. In a long-running Chanel regret thread the flaps people sold were seasonal, tweed, or the wrong size for their frame, not the plain caviar classic.
Every thread eventually becomes an argument about the current price. Owners who bought a decade ago at a fraction of it say plainly they would not buy one new today, and would shop preloved instead.
The second flap is the icon and the tax. It eats interior volume and adds a step to every reach, so the medium holds barely more than a mini and owners who moved to single-flap Chanels rarely go back.
