The Tabby traces to a 1970s-era design lineage associated with legendary Coach designer Bonnie Cashin, though the specific silhouette sold today is not a direct 1:1 reissue of a single original model -- sourcing on the exact original product is thin. Creative director Stuart Vevers relaunched the Tabby as a modern style in Fall 2019, and it became one of Coach's signature turn-lock bags, sold in multiple sizes (commonly 26 and Shoulder Bag configurations) and many limited-edition material/print collaborations.

Coach started in 1941 in Manhattan as a men's leather goods workshop. Taken with how a well-worn baseball glove softened with use, its makers developed the supple Glove-Tanned cowhide that became the brand's signature.

Date code format (Production record)
Modern Coach (post-2014) generally does NOT print a decodable month/year date code. The Tabby's interior creed carries a STYLE number, not a date code -- letter+digits (e.g. CH857) or legacy 5-digit numeric (e.g. 73995). Suffix letters after a hyphen: F = factory/outlet exclusive, M = Macy's exclusive, N = Nordstrom exclusive.
Stamp placement (Production record)
Style number stamped at the bottom of a square leather creed patch, stitched inside the main interior compartment. Unlike softer modern Coach styles (which moved the number to a sewn-in white fabric tag c.2014), the structured Tabby retains a stamped leather creed. Font must be crisp and evenly spaced; faded or poorly-printed text is a red flag. Counterfeit creed patches are often undersized with too little space around the embossed border outline and text.

Modern format (circa 2020+): Coach moved to alphanumeric style numbers (letter + four-digit sequence, e.g. CH857), and around 2014 began phasing out stamped date codes on the creed patch entirely -- many current creed patches show only the authenticity paragraph with no numbers underneath, with style/factory info moved to a separate fabric tag sewn into the lining. NOTE: the structured Tabby is an exception -- it retains a STAMPED leather creed carrying the style number, rather than moving it to a fabric tag. · placement: Interior leather patch stamped inside the main compartment of the Tabby (bottom of a square leather creed patch). Vintage/other modern styles may use a fabric tag near the lining seam. · Vintage: first two letters = factory/inspector code, middle number = style number, final two digits = year of production. Modern (2020+): style numbers follow patterns such as Letter+4 digits (e.g. CH857), or Letter+4digits-Letter+4digits, or with suffixes -- an 'F' after a hyphen indicates a Factory/outlet-exclusive bag; 'M' indicates Macy's exclusive; 'N' indicates Nordstrom exclusive.
