Chanel Boy Small: production, authentication, and value
Chanel · Tier 1
Boy
By Arielle · Catalogued July 2026
The Chanel Boy is a structured shoulder flap bag introduced by Karl Lagerfeld for the Fall/Winter 2011 collection, named after Coco Chanel's love Boy Capel. It trades the house's soft curves for a boxier, more androgynous silhouette, with a wide quilted or embossed body and a heavy chain-and-leather strap. Its signature is the boy-style push-lock clasp on the front, a chunky rectangular latch that replaced the classic CC turn-lock. It quickly became one of Chanel's core permanent lines alongside the Classic Flap.

Karl Lagerfeld named Chanel's edgiest bag after the great love of Coco's life.
Origin
Named for Boy Capel
The Boy debuted in Chanel's Fall/Winter 2011 collection, introduced by Karl Lagerfeld. He named it for Arthur 'Boy' Capel, the English polo player who was Coco Chanel's muse, great love and the backer of her first stores.
Lagerfeld drew on a cartridge bag, the kind hunters use to carry ammunition, for a boxier, more masculine shape with bold hardware, a deliberate contrast to the soft Classic Flap.

As Lagerfeld put it, Coco Chanel had a boyish attitude she got from Boy Capel, the great love of her life, which is why the bag is called the Boy Chanel.
