The Speedy arrived in 1930 as a smaller take on the popular Keepall travel bag. In an era of faster travel by car, train and plane, it was first called the Express.
In 1959 Audrey Hepburn asked Louis Vuitton to miniaturize the bag into something she could carry every day. The resulting Speedy 25, just 25 centimeters wide, turned the style into an icon and is still a favorite size.

For most of its life the Speedy was a hand-carry. In 2011 the Speedy Bandoulière added a long strap so it could finally be worn on the shoulder or across the body. Bandoulière is French for shoulder strap.

The case for
Canvas Speedys outlive their owners' interest in them. People in these threads are still carrying bags from 1984, 1989 and 1998, and the wear that turns up is at the corners and handles, not the body.
It is a wipe-and-go bag. Coated canvas shrugs off spilled coffee and rain, the empty body weighs almost nothing, and owners describe genuinely throwing it around rather than babying it.
Resale is dependable and preloved is the usual advice. Owners routinely find near-new secondhand ones for a real saving, and several think the older production runs are the better made ones.
Top handle only, and it shows. The handles bite into your hand and wrist when the bag is loaded, you cannot go hands free, and parents say it stops working the day you have a toddler.
One open pocket inside and a fabric lining that stains. Owners keep everything in pouches or buy an organizer, and treat that insert as part of what the bag costs.
The coating can crack where the canvas creases, and reviewers describe that as damage nobody can undo. It turns up often enough that owners check for it when buying secondhand.
Vachetta is the care burden on monogram and Azur. It darkens unevenly and marks in rain, which is why several owners keep a Damier Ebene Speedy as the bad-weather bag instead.
