Burberry
The Burberry story
The English house that invented a weatherproof cloth, then dressed a century of officers in it.
England, 1856. Thomas Burberry opened his outfitter’s shop at 21, building the house on practical, weatherproof clothing.
Gabardine, 1879. He invented gabardine, a tightly woven cloth waterproofed before weaving so it kept rain out and still breathed, and patented it in 1888.
The trench’s ancestor. His Tielocken coat, the trench’s predecessor, proved popular with officers in the First World War.
