Constance
Catalogued July 2026
The Hermes Constance is a structured shoulder and crossbody flap introduced in 1959, designed by house draftswoman Catherine Chaillet, who named it after her daughter born the same year. Its signature is the large H-shaped clasp on the front flap, worn on a long strap that can be doubled to shorten it. Made in leathers such as Box, Epsom, and Swift, it is one of Hermes' most collectible bags after the Birkin and Kelly. Its clean lines and bold H closure have kept it in demand for decades.

The Story
Named for a baby born the very day it left the workshop, and closed with a single bold H.
Design
The H that clicks shut
The Constance is instantly recognizable for its bold H clasp. The H is also the lock: it opens and closes with a spring mechanism hidden on each side of the metal bar attached to the flap.

Hermès authentication: The markers worth checking
Hermès uses no serial number, so the blind stamp, the craftsman's mark, and the hand saddle-stitch carry the read. The era cutoffs and hardware tells that matter on a Birkin or Kelly, and why no marker is proof.

Birkin vs Kelly: which Hermès bag should you get?
On resale the two cost almost the same size-for-size, so the real choice is shape and how you carry it. What each lists for now, and the steep small-size premium on both.
