Bamboo 1947 is Gucci's revival of its original bamboo-handled bag, a top-handle design the house first created in 1947 using heat-bent bamboo when leather was scarce in postwar Italy. Alessandro Michele reintroduced it as the Bamboo 1947 for Gucci's 2021 Aria collection, keeping the curved bamboo handle and turn-lock while updating the proportions. The name marks the year of the original design.

Gucci introduced the Bamboo bag in 1947, in the lean years after the war when leather and metal were scarce in Italy. Short on materials, the house's artisans turned to bamboo imported from Japan.
Craftsmen heated and curved the bamboo over an open flame into its signature arched handle, a method that holds its shape once cooled. Each handle is still shaped by hand in Florence using that 1947 technique.
