The Story

Named for a Greek god who, the myth says, rode a tiger across a river.

Origin

A god among bags

When Alessandro Michele became Gucci's creative director in 2015 he introduced the Dionysus, named for the ancient Greek god of wine, celebration and a touch of madness.

Design

The tiger-head clasp

The two tiger heads on the closure come from a myth in which Dionysus crossed a river on a tiger's back, the river later named the Tigris. The horseshoe shape behind them nods to Gucci's long equestrian heritage.

Culture

Michele's calling card

Layered with mythology and archival references, the Dionysus helped define Michele's eclectic, maximalist era at Gucci and became one of the house's signature modern bags.
