The GG Marmont arrived for Fall/Winter 2016, early in Alessandro Michele's tenure. He pulled the Double G from a 1970s Gucci belt buckle, scaled it up, gave it an antiqued finish and set it front and center.
The Marmont is instantly known for its soft matelassé chevron leather. Matelassé is a padded, quilted texture, here stitched into a raised chevron pattern.

The case for
The sliding chain earns its keep. Doubled up it is a shoulder or top-handle bag, let all the way out it is a crossbody, and owners say that one switch takes it from errands to dinner.
It holds more than the measurements suggest, because the soft leather gives. A long wallet fits the small if you edit around it, and the medium takes one without a fight.
The leather wears better than the discourse suggests. Owners at two and three years report no corner wear and scratches you have to hunt for, on bags they say they never babied.
It works as a first serious bag. Owners describe reaching for it over pricier Dior and Chanel pieces, and the black with antique gold goes with most of a wardrobe.
One soft flap and almost no internal structure. Owners store it stuffed, and several report the front flattening and the top going pointy after a few years of wear.
Creasing is the complaint that lands first. One owner found creases on the flap out of the box and Gucci assessed them as external, not a fault. Others report folds that will not buff out.
The antique gold does not stay perfect. Owners report fading on the chain by year three and black speckling on the front GG logo by year four, on the part of the bag everyone looks at.
Resale is the soft spot. Owners and reviewers describe it trading like a trend piece, and the pre-loved market is deep enough that buyers walk in expecting a discount.
It is one of the most copied bags on the market. Owners say the fakes read close enough that strangers assume a dupe, which is its own kind of tax on carrying the real one.
