Gucci introduced the Bamboo bag in 1947, in the lean years after the war when leather and metal were scarce in Italy. Short on materials, the house's artisans turned to bamboo imported from Japan.

Craftsmen heated and curved the bamboo over an open flame into its signature arched handle, a method that holds its shape once cooled. Each handle is still shaped by hand in Florence using that 1947 technique.
